The importance of setting goals has been routinely espoused. From keeping us motivated and focused to measuring our progress and providing us with fulfilment, goal setting can offer us a lot both professionally and personally. Or as author, life coach and motivational speaker Tony Robbins puts it, “Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.”
Thinking along these lines the Varity Project Services team has compiled a list of at least three professional/personal goals that they are each working towards in 2022.
Brendan McGrorey, Director
Simplify: I’m trying to remove the unnecessary items/activities from my daily life to make things easier and reduce the amount of decisions I need to make so I have more time for the important things. I’ve just begun to cut down on the amount and types of ‘news/content’ I consume, which means I’ll probably not be up-to-date with every issue and story, but I’ll have more time for the things I want to do.
Grow the Varity team: Despite the uncertain environment, the construction industry looks like having a strong 2022. With the current skills shortage and businesses adopting more flexible resource models, I think there is a great opportunity to grow our client base and expand our team.
More outdoors activities/adventures with my family: I really want to focus on spending more time outdoors in nature. You never regret heading to the beach or going for a bush walk, there is something about it that does wonders for your wellbeing. We’ve recently done a few nature trail walks with the kids and it’s a great way to spend time together as a family and a lot of fun, so I want to do more of that.
Paul Young, Director, Senior Project Manager
Increase client base: I'd like to add at least two new clients to our client base. Whilst adding two may seem a small goal, ensuring we can service and deliver to the highest possible standard for those clients means we need to manage our growth whilst servicing our existing client base.
Do more networking: I want to get back to doing more face-to-face personal meetings/catch-ups with people in what I hope is a return to post-COVID "normal" work environment.
Read more and to read more widely: Having had the chance to relax and read a couple of good books whilst away over the holiday period, I recaptured the joy of reading and I'd like to keep that going.
Graham Dowdell, Senior Consultant
Continued education: I’m currently studying for my Certified Practising Accountant program and didn't find enough time to devote to this last year. This year I need to contribute small amounts of time on a consistent basis to work through the courses and not extend my current exam beyond July 2022.
Focus on wellbeing: Last year I worked away from home and found it difficult to exercise. This year when working away I plan to contact the local gym and make a point to ensure I pack my gym bag and bring it with me to work for use afterwards. 2021 was a good year for my physical health but I always want to improve.
Business: Continue contributing to the Varity team by spreading the business name, not only by word of mouth, but by providing great service to our clients and demonstrating that a flexible working environment is the new normal.
Personal: Spend more time with my family and travel locally to appreciate what’s at my doorstep.
Nuatali Wickham, Assistant Project Manager
Enhance my industry skills: Being on this side of project management certainly is an eye opener to just how vast the construction industry is and the many nuts and bolts that go together to make it all happen. Every day I learn something new, and with potential of growth in the Varity Project Services pipeline, I am wanting to expand my knowledge and further activate my skill set to its full potential. I’m glad that I have a great team to undertake this journey with.
Expand my professional network: I’ve kicked this year off by attending a couple of professional networking events. I’m looking to attend many more as the year progresses to grow my relationships within various industries and gain exposure for Varity Project Services.
More reading: I believe that knowledge is power, so the more I know the better. I find reading to be the best source of knowledge. With that in mind, I’m looking to pick up and read as many books as I can, ranging from new construction industry approaches to how to make the best margarita. So far this year, I can make a killer margarita!
At Varity, we plan on checking back in on our goals throughout the year and we'll report back on how we’ve progressed toward the year’s end.
